The Hits Just Keep on Coming
In his recent Washington Post opinion piece, Harvard astrophysicist Howard Smith began with yet more Warfare Thesis history:There was a time, back when astronomy put Earth at the center of the universe, that we thought we were special.
Actually we “put Earth at the center of the universe” as a consequence of Aristotelian physics, not because of any anthropomorphism. That is the imaginary history, foisted on us by the Warfare Thesis, which can be traced back to Voltaire, but rose in prominence in the 19th century.
Can you not read for comprehension? The article didn't say
ReplyDelete"There was a time, back when astronomy put Earth at the center of the universe BECAUSE we thought we were special.
It is saying
"There was a time, back when astronomy put Earth at the center of the universe, AND that we thought we were special" which is describing a time with two separate ideas
1. We thought the Earth was the center of the universe
2. We thought (humans) were special.
The two aren't connected except in your mind.
Oh the irony. Your false quote aside, they are only *unconnected* in your mind (as anyone remotely familiar with the Warfare Thesis understands).
DeleteThanks. Yes, I too get sick and tired of evolutionists making all sorts of claims about the past .... the world was flat, the heavens were a dome, the earth is the center of the universe and etc - and it was ONLY science that saved us from such ignorance, which was promoted by the Bible .... The arguments are all so patently hollow.

ReplyDeleteThe evidence of heliocentric mother was clearly evident back in Aristotle's time. As far as I know, the planets existed back then. We are all guilty of anthropomorphism. And we know that it can cloud our judgement.
You realize his thesis is that we are special in the eyes of astronomy. Is it still the Warfare Thesis when both science and religion are on the same side?
ReplyDeleteYes, I realize that. It's equally opportunity criticism--we report, you decide.
DeleteIt is such a clear agenda of anyone, almost, who documents science progress since the middle ages to establish the bible/Christianity/Chuirch was opposed to accuracy in conclusions about nature IF it opposed religious authority.
ReplyDeletethey beat a drum about it. YES they have a anti-Christian agenda and not a neutral science history agenda.
Yet the whole church resistence really was based on confidence in man about conclusions. Not the bible.
it was the old Greeks they placed so much faith in.
Probably the catholic church wanted human intellectual authority behind ideas they thoiugh Christianity taught.
The Catholic church today is impressed with MANS ideas on origins and not the bible. Its protestants who are unimpressed with those man ideas opposed to the bible. As usual/
Creationism is bvery much protestant.
Christianity does not and never did reject any proven point in science.
The Catholic church did.
Its a cheap desperate agenda to defeat christian truth by proxy of past errors that were not christian errors.
take all these history commentators on and use their error/agenda as evidence for being the bad/dumb guys in the story.
